Eating is an activity that is unavoidable for your entire existence. You do it with everyone, on birthdays, family days, work parties, drinks, with your housemates, outdoors and alone. Have you ever eaten in front of a mirror? Then you can see how you eat, how often you can look in your mouth, how you take the bites and how big the bites are and if you look closely, you can also hear the sounds you make. Have you ever kept a clock to see how long it takes you, or how long it can take you? And which colors are on your plate.

Are there more colors on your plate than you are wearing today?

What happens to the color of food? How does food get its color? Not to dive completely into that now, but to talk about the color of food, I ask you as a reader if you have ever paid attention to which food you eat the most? For example, I eat a lot of bread. In the morning, two slices from the toaster, preferably with chocolate spread and a large cup of black coffee. My breakfast mainly consists of the colour brown, I also like white bread, but I now know that it contains less fiber, which can hinder bowel movements. Which also happens to be brown.

When I choose fruit, I like to eat strawberries, they are so deliciously sweet. ÉÉN ZOET.

Food. it comes back to you all day long. A subject that I was not very good at talking about at first, but which I am getting better at. A subject that kept repeating itself in my life and which I chose to put an end to in order to become free from it.

My collection is a movement through food, first you hold it in front of you, then against you. You slowly put it on and disappear into it. Then you only feel your feet and you slowly take it off again. Please note: it is a movement that you will repeat throughout the day, throughout your life.

I chose fruit because that wasn't the trigger for me. It made me comfortable and I could play with it all the time. What shape, color, realistic or imagined, big or small, thick or thin, hard or soft. It had no effect on me. It has healed me and shown me that food is not nearly as bad as I had always thought.

And now repeat further.

Don’t you want to learn, do things, make, create, meet people, laugh and so on? Life is so much more than just what comes into your mind. Life is everything. Everything is life.

Schaapje aapje

A project about my twin sister and I. A photo from the past where we stroll together, next to each other, at the campsite. A memory of which I know many. At various campsites throughout France and Italy.

This is a project I did in the third year of my studies, it showed that text and color are two important parts in my thoughts to get a more concrete picture of what is going on in my head. By putting together a map of the memories that my sister and I have and looking in detail at what we used to wear, in terms of color, shape and print.

For example, I put baby and toddler photos next to each other and I was able to build a web with where we wore the same and where not, and whether these were conscious choices on our part or on my mother's. To see where we no longer looked like twins in clothing.

Make the comparison but also conclude the differences.

For example, I photographed my clothes from my wardrobe individually and did the same with my sister. Which colors still matched and which ones did we wear separately? Which colors were the most similar and was there an explanation for this?

And how did we find out? Was it a simple twin phenomenon of things you have interests in because you were in the womb together or that you are influenced by the environment in which you grow up?

Or is it in our own communication? Because we built a strong bond, spent a lot of time together and could lean on each other, and as a result we developed our own language.

Which is readable for us alone.

Because if you are twins, identical or fraternal, you always share your birthday, people congratulate you together and that you therefore have one language that you share with your other half from the womb and that is this language.

This research led me to focus on most of our communications, which were often about the app. Just a quick text, with questions about 'What do you think about this?' or 'Do you think this suits me?' or 'Don't you have something like this hanging in your closet, can I borrow that from you?'

My sister and I are also very lucky in that we are almost the same size in clothes, unfortunately not in shoes. This means we can often lend clothes to each other or I can try them on for her, entertain them and then I'm almost certain that she will try them on too.

In addition to the color similarities in both our wardrobes, I also looked at the shape of the garments. Are there similarities in certain shapes that we seek out and like to wear? And can these shapes be recreated in a single garment that can be worn in multiple ways, allowing the different shapes to be worn? And also the details of the garments. Think of collars, pleats, buttons, etc.

Blue is a color that we used to wear a lot with red and green and white striped with blue. Blue is a color that we also wear a lot now. Jeans, but also tops. That blue one called Serulian. Then Navy blue, black and red. Light yellow is her favorite color and red is mine.

Let's make an alphabet of our language.

BIRB

The magnificent bird of paradise has many different specifications that distinguish the bird from other birds. For example, he has a neon green chest that he shows to attract other females for mating and to make himself look attractive. Also, he is a male and I am a female.

In a study of 'magnificent' there are many. You have magnificent in: fashion, society, film, development (of the species of birds), in the color green, in plants, and in how the bird is seen in society.

To specify the relationship between the bird and me, I looked at all the details that were similar and different. For example, in this research I tried to dress up as him. By examining the bird's chest and recreating it. First literally using fabric from soft feathers and turning them into new fabric. Or painting canvas until I found the exact color combination. Try try try. And that's how I ended up weaving.

I tried to intertwine myself with the bird until we became one. Literally weaving fabric, weaving multiple materials on different fabrics together so that the resulting texture ultimately gives a realistic feeling. Not only in appearance but also in atmosphere.

This project was quite complicated to be honest, I spent a lot of time thinking about what exactly I wanted to make instead of thinking about how I describe my process here. I wanted to know too much about what the end product must look like and that caused me to lose the value I had built up in it. This project of mine is a learning process. I made bags, pieces of woven fabric, took many photos in the process, but for me no concrete image emerged, so when I think back about this project, it remains difficult for me to describe what exactly I was doing. Except I was making a lot of work.

Ultimately, the process was the work. An edification about the bird, its development and in mirror image with me. A process that remained difficult to connect for me and therefore found no logical way to come together. I turned it into a book that could be connected in a harmonious way. As a result, this work always has two sides and you can choose what to open and what not.

A free assignment. Where do I start? Making collages. Where color, language and shape, play with each other. It can be about everything or nothing. By making collages that give a completely different atmosphere than what they are intended for. Exchanging emotions or by adding emotions that make you doubt. Don't think about it for too long, just cut it out and stick it on. The most beautiful things are created in those short seconds.

My collages contain a lot of color, because I can express myself better with color than when I leave the image black and white. With color I can shape, turn it around and stimulate the image. Poetic. An image that feels tender, yet angry. An image that shows love but hate. An image that laughs but cries.

To mix these images together, SOMETHING WITH PAINT, I started looking at how that image can be realized. Ultimately it has to be something that you can actually hold or wear, because I am in the fashion department. Mixed media. Working with used images from magazines, a small recycling process to create something new, I also wanted to incorporate this into the physical image. So with leftover fabric from previous projects that I had saved and pieces of clothing that I no longer wore, I limited my fabric choices.

Because reusing fabric and clothing is something that stimulates my creative thinking and searches for even better possibilities than when a fabric is on a roll, I can think of more uses. But I did want to create a symphony, the fabrics and the colors sing with each other, they merge and together they say:

Lach eens, lach eens, lach eens

Even is het stil

                    hadden we ons verkeken?

De kraan blijft draaien voor de zeven liter flessen die gevuld moeten worden voordat we erop uitwaaien en smelten in de zon van haar.

zijn we haar?                         iemand chocola?

Proost in drinken,

                                                                                    daar

Ik ga een blokje om waar?

I WANT TO SEE MORE THAN THERE IS

An assignment where you are only allowed to work with black fabric. Bring an image that you have a connection with and try to translate it into how or what the image tells you. Mine were a pair of binoculars that my grandmother gave me.

The object says it all, you can look into the distance with it. But the object itself is also very beautiful. You can give it space by moving the lenses further apart or back again.

If there is not light, you can't see anything through it. But what if you put the light on itself?

What do you see then?

I saw new shapes created by the shadows of the object and the brighter the light the sharper and darker the shadow became. Almost black. Can I use it to create a shape that remains a shadow or can I also translate it into a shape that you can physically hold?

Trying out. With reflective material that repels and absorbs light.
With reflective material that provides shade but also makes it visible.

Mine comes into view at 4:58

ArtEZ - fashion design Arnhem - first year 2018

Here my love for creating shapes started when i enterd the fashion design at ArtEZ. We were only aloud to use the fabric seen on the photos (parachute and unbleached cotton), i could focus more on the build and each shape.

However the studie itself was not working out for me. but it was a great learning curve to figure out what was my need to grow in fashion. On that note: thank you for learning me.

Ode aan Roos

Roos by Stoof

My graduation collection from Fashion Tailoring in 2017.

The collection is inspired by my dearest twin sister. Roos has always supported me in happy and unhappy times. She is a great inspiration to me and I should like to thank her for that. She supports my choices and keeps me focused on the goal I am working towards. We watch films, art, theatre, books and music together.

A Fall/Winter collection, with soft and warm fabrics with comfortable, sporty and dressed in mind. Something that Roos and I would both wear.
